A practical guide

Find the usable space beneath a sloped ceiling

An attic’s floor area can overstate how much of the room is comfortable to use while standing. Rumblespace lets you model the ceiling slope, see where a chosen headroom height is available, and check whether furniture reaches above the roof line. Use the plan for measurements and the 3D views to understand how the space fits together.

Measure the finished room, not just the roof

Begin with the inside floor outline, including any recesses or angled walls that affect furniture placement. Measure the finished low wall, often called a knee wall, and the highest point of the ceiling. These should describe the surfaces inside the room, after insulation, lining, and finishes, rather than structural measurements outside the roof. A small difference between the structural and finished dimensions can matter when a wardrobe or bed sits close to the slope.

The attic planner uses the same room tools as the general visualizer. You can begin with a rectangle, edit the corners, or trace an existing floor-plan image. A traced floor plan normally describes only the horizontal outline; it does not supply the ceiling geometry automatically. Add the height information from your measurements after tracing. If the room is still being designed, use the model to compare proposed inside dimensions rather than treating it as a construction drawing.

Choose a central ridge or a single slope

Use Two slopes for a gable ceiling with a centered ridge and equal low-wall heights on the opposing sides. Use One slope for a ceiling that rises from one side of the room to the other. Choose whether the slope runs across the room’s width or along its length. In a single-slope room, reverse the high and low sides when the initial direction does not match the space you are modeling.

Set the low-wall height and the ridge or high-wall height. The roof angle follows from those heights and the span. You can also adjust the slope control to change the high point while keeping the low wall fixed. The controls show the current angle and a cross-section diagram. The supported profiles are centered gables and single slopes aligned with the room’s plan axes; complex dormers, offset ridges, compound roofs, and independently angled roof planes are not modeled as separate surfaces.

Visualize the area with enough headroom

Choose the headroom height you want to inspect and enable the overlay in Plan view. Amber areas lie below that height, while the unshaded part of the room has at least the selected clearance. The area readout summarizes how much floor meets that threshold. This is useful for distinguishing total floor area from space where a person can stand or perform a particular activity without encountering the sloped ceiling.

The threshold is adjustable because different activities need different clearances. A storage box can use a low edge that is unsuitable for a standing route. A desk may fit beneath a slope, but getting into the chair or standing up introduces a different height requirement. The overlay is a geometric planning aid, not a legal floor-area calculation or building-code assessment. Use the requirements that apply to your project and confirm them with an appropriate professional when approval is involved.

Check beds, wardrobes, and storage against the ceiling

Place a bed, cabinet, or other furniture template and enter its actual overall dimensions. The planner compares the full height of the piece with the ceiling over its footprint. A tall cabinet near the knee wall can produce a warning even though its base fits neatly inside the floor outline. Move it toward the ridge, rotate it, or try a shorter item to see which arrangement avoids the ceiling conflict.

A furniture-height check does not fully describe the space needed by the person using the item. A low bed frame may fit while the person sitting up hits the ceiling. A chest can fit while an open lid cannot. Consider those activities separately using the adjustable headroom overlay, use-space guides, and different viewpoints. Conservative rectangular templates are useful for screening possibilities, but unusual furniture shapes and moving parts should be checked using the actual product information.

Inspect the room in Dollhouse and Walk inside

Dollhouse view cuts away the ceiling and selected walls so you can see the arrangement. The wall tops follow the modeled slope, providing a readable cross-section of the room. Drag furniture directly to reposition it, or use Plan view when precise alignment is easier from above. Selecting a piece keeps its dimensions available next to the preview on larger screens, making it easier to test a change without losing sight of the result.

Walk inside shows the ceiling as part of the room and places the viewpoint at the selected eye height. Movement checks the space beneath the slope as well as room boundaries and furniture. Use a seated viewpoint when evaluating low areas, but remember that camera eye height is not a complete body or reach model. Keep the camera field of view consistent when comparing roof heights, since a wider view can make a small attic appear more spacious.

Review openings and compare practical layouts

Existing doors and windows do not automatically shrink when you lower the roof. The planner can flag an opening that reaches above the sloped ceiling so you can move it, reduce its height, or reconsider the profile. This is especially relevant when you convert a previously flat room model into an attic. A wall opening is different from a roof window; the current window tool places openings in walls, not through the sloping roof surfaces.

Use layout comparison to retain a starting arrangement while trying a different storage position or roof height. Download each version you want to keep before leaving the page.
